Bermuda law firm advertising and ethics

As reported by Legal Cheek, the English Bar Standards Board has just reprimanded and fined an English QC for describing himself on his website,, as the UK’s ‘top criminal barrister’ (and using a number of similar marketing puffs and hyperbole).

Bermuda law firms should take notice, and some of them should potentially review some of the claims and statements made on some of their own websites, taking into account relevant sections of the Bermuda Bar Code of Conduct, as well as the Bar Council’s Practice Promotion Code (Firm Advertising Guidelines) – although these guidelines do not appear to have been updated for 20 years, since they were first published in 1997.
